James Brown, a veteran of Lititz, died on Thursday afternoon, January 2. Deceased was stricken with paralysis more than six weeks ago, from which he never recovered. He was born in Manheim, but resided in Lititz for many years. He went into the army as a substitute for a Warwick township farmer, and served in Co. A, 16th Pa. Cavalry, from October 30, 1862, to August 11, 1865. Mr. Brown was 76 years old last July, and was the oldest member of Stevens Post, G.A.R. Mr. Brown was almost fifty years of age when he entered the army, and was, therefore, not subject to the draft. The funeral will be held on Sunday, at 9:30, at the house. He will be buried by the Grand Army. The funeral sermon will be preached in the Lutheran church by Rev. Lewars. The Lancaster Daily Examiner, Friday, January 3, 1890
