A Fearful Accident Near Leaman Place on Saturday. Mrs. Phares Eaby, wife of the miller of J. C. Snavely's Osceolo Mills, near Leaman Place, met a horrible death from burning on Saturday morning. Mrs. Eaby was working among her chickens, when the lamp in a brooder exploded, setting fire to her dress. She was alone at the time, and unable to successfully fight the flames, and being crazed by the agony of the torture, the woman ran screaming into the yard, a veritable pillar of fire. Her husband heard her cries, and finally reached her with a piece of carpet and smothered the remaining flames. His rescue came too late, as the burns were so serious that the woman died four hours after the occurrence. Besides her husband, she is survived by one child. Mrs. Eaby was well known and respected, and her tragic and sudden death is a shock to the entire community. Ephrata Reporter, Ephrata, PA, Friday Evening, April 15, 1898
