A Well-Known Lancaster Countian Dies on Sunday at "Ivy Home." John J. Evans, a well-known and highly esteemed resident of Lancaster county, died on Sunday night at 10:45 o'clock, at his pretty residence, "Ivy Home," situated opposite Graeff's Landing. Deceased has been ill about two weeks, and death was caused by a complication of diseases. Mr. Evans was born in Lancaster city, on January 10, 1819, and he was consequently in the seventy-first year of his age. He was the eldest son of Robert Evans, a prominent merchant of his day. Mr. Evans' father died at middle age, and he took charge of the farms in Little Britain township. He remained there until 1869, when he removed to "Ivy Home." Since 1869 Mr. Evans has resided there. When he was living in Little Britain township he took an active interest in politics, and was prominent as a Republican leader. He never held any public office, refusing any emoluments of a political nature. Deceased was a constant Presbyterian. His wife survives and also the following children: Robert J., of this city; John H., living at "Ivy Home," and Emily, Helena, Maretta and Lillie. Deceased was a brother of William W. Evans, farmer of Little Britain township; Mrs. Jane Bryan, of Peoria, Ill, and Mrs. D. P. Locher, city. He was also a brother of the late Robert A. Evans. The relatives and friends of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral, from his late residence, "Ivy Home," on Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Interment at Woodward Hill cemetery.
