A Succession of Dread Calamities in the Fite Family. QUARRYVILLE, April 20. – A terrible accident occurred Saturday evening a short distance south of Oak Hill, in Little Britain township, by which one man lost his life and another was badly hurt. Samuel Fite, sr., owns a farm in that section, which was farmed by his nephew, Samuel Fite, jr., the former living with his nephew. Early on Saturday morning they heard considerable noise in the horse stable, and both ran out. They found one of the horses loose and biting and teasing another. The younger man caught the loose horse and tied him back in his stall. The old gentleman went into the stall to quiet the other, which was usually a very gentle beast; but the moment Mr. Fite entered the stall the horse struck at him with his front feet, threw him down and began cutting him. The young man ran to his assistance, taking hold of his uncle to pull him out. No sooner had he stooped than the vicious and now enraged brute kicked him with fearful force on the head, knocking him insensible. The alarmed men having made some outcry, by this time other assistance arrived and both the Fites were carried out covered with blood. The elder was found to be terribly bruised and had a leg broken; the younger was insensible and so remained until his death, which occurred inside of twelve hours. He leaves a wife and six children; he was about 40 years old and was a man of much popularity, having been manager for the well known stock raiser and farmer, Henry Wood, for a long time until Mr. Wood sold his farm. A PAINFUL COINCIDENCE. There is another incident connected with this family which makes the tragedy still more sad. Miss Ada Fite, a cousin of Samuel, jr., came from her home in Philadelphia with her widowed mother about three weeks ago on a visit to her relatives. While there she was suddenly taken sick and only lived a few days, and was buried from his place. She was only 21 years old and a most estimable young lady. The body of young Fite will be buried on Wednesday. Meantime the uncle lies in a very critical condition, attended by Drs. Sides and Peoples. There is much sympathy and sorrow among the people of that locality, over the afflictions of the sorely distressed family. Lancaster Daily Intelligencer, April 20, 1885
