Death of a Kindly, Honest Old Man at His Home on South Queen Street. Henry A. Gable, a respected, much-esteemed old resident of Lancaster, died on Sunday morning shortly before nine o'clock, at his home, Nos. 346 and 348 South Queen street. The cause of death was paralysis. About two weeks ago he was stricken in his grocery store while attending to the wants of a customer. This was followed by a second stroke and deceased began sinking rapidly and his death became only a question of a brief time. Deceased was a native of Deiberg, Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. He was born on October 13, 1817, and was consequently in the 73d year of his age. He came to America with his parents when he was fourteen years of age. In those days of sailing vessels crossing the Atlantic was not the pleasure trip of a week as it is now on the swift ocean greyhounds, and the Gable family were seventy-two days on the water before they touched America's shores. The family located in Lancaster, and young Gable learned the trade of shoemaking with the later Peter McConomy. Shoemaking did not agree with his health, and he opened at little store at 346 South Queen street. Prosperity coming to the store, he gave up shoemaking entirely. For about forty years Mr. Gable has lived in the house in which he died. He was a kindly, honest old man of sterling integrity, and he lived a life of peace and quiet, with "malice toward none and charity for all." He earned the respect of his neighbors and was held in high esteem. Deceased was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and of St. Joseph's and St. Bernard's Beneficial Societies. For fifty-five years he has been a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and was one of its oldest members. His wife died in 1880. The following children survive: Ambrose, of Fort Worth, Texas; James C., first assistant of the Boy's High School; Barbara, Mrs. Annie J. Delzeit, of Camden, N.J.; Margie, Celia A., a school teacher in the county, and Mrs. Theresa Suter, of Harrisburg. The funeral will take place on Wednesday. Services will be held in St. Mary's church; interment in St. Mary's cemetery. The Lancaster Daily Examiner, Monday, January 13, 1890 DIED. GABLE. January 12, 1890, in this city, Henry A. Gable, in his 73d year. The relatives and friends of the family, also St. Joseph's and St. Bernard's societies, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, No. 346 South Queen street on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock. High mass at St. Mary's church at 9:30 o'clock. Interment at St. Mary's cemetery. The Lancaster Daily Examiner, Monday, January 13, 1890
