Given, one of the best known residents of Southeastern Pennsylvania, died on Wednesday at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Winfield Allen, 4937 Penn street, Frankford, where for some years he had lived in retirement. He was born in Columbia, Lancaster county, June 2, 1820. After reading law he entered the service of the Pennsylvania Railroad company. It was this time that he became an ardent Democrat. Prior to the late war he moved to Maryland, where he was elected to the Legislature of that state. After serving six years he resigned his seat, but remained in Baltimore until after the war. From that city he moved to his old home, Columbia. Afterwards he became an assistant to Weigher Cochran at the Philadelphia mint, from which he retired in 1888. Among his intimate friends were Colonel Thomas A. Scott, Howard H. Houston, John Cochran, Messrs. Palmer and Buckner, late candidates of the Gold Democrats for president and vice president, and William B. Given. During his residence in Frankford he associated himself with the Methodist Episcopal church and was highly esteemed. Lancaster Intelligencer, Saturday, June 12, 1897
