LOUIS E. GLEFFER DEAD.

A Well Known Printer Who Was
Born in this City.

Louis E. Gleffer, a well known printer, died at his home, No. 213 Federal 
street, Allegheny city, on Friday morning.  He attended the inauguration of 
President McKinley and while in Washington contracted a cold, from which 
pneumonia followed, resulting in death.  Deceased was the son of the late Prof. 
Gleffer and was born in this city forty years ago.  He served his apprenticeship 
at the Express office, after which he was employed in the INTELLIGENCER 
composing room.  He went to Pittsburg in 1877 and was employed on the Post until 
1880 when the printers' big strike was inaugurated.  He was a member of the 
Typographical Union and became the proprietor and editor of the Labor Herald in 
1880.  This paper was the official organ of the Typographical Union, the 
Amalgamated association and other labor organizations.  He continued in the 
management of this paper until 1884, when its publication was allowed to lapse 
by reason of failure of these organizations to give it support.  Mr. Gleffer 
then went back to the case.  For the past seven years he operated one of the 
type-setting machines in the office of the Pittsburg Dispatch.  He represented 
the Pittsburg Typographical Union at several national conventions.  He was known 
in Pittsubrg as "The Scout", a nickname given him when he first went to 
Pittsburg, on account of the Western style of dress he affected.  His wife was a 
daughter of Henry Huber, of this city.  She and several children survive.
