David J. Hughes, 59, a longtime resident of South Scranton, died Monday morning
at home. He and his wife, the former Alice M. McNamara, celebrated their 38th
wedding anniversary July 3. Born in Buffalo, N.Y., son of the late Gerard and
Marian Murphy Hughes, he was a member of the Church of St. Joseph. A 1961
graduate of St. Mary of the Assumption High School, he was the captain of its
basketball team and earned the Monsignor Schmidt Award for performance
excellence. He also coached the biddy basketball team at St. Mary of the
Assumption Church for many years. He served as a staff sergeant in the
Pennsylvania Army National Guard, earning the Marksmanship Badge, the
Pennsylvania Service Ribbon and the General T.J. Steward Medal. He was employed
by The Tribune for 21 years as circulation director, then worked for seven years
with The Times-Tribune newspapers in the circulation department. He was employed
by WEA Manufacturing for the past three years. He was a loving husband, father,
brother and uncle, who will be sorely missed. Surviving are two sons, David
Anthony Hughes, Wausau, Wis., and Daniel Thomas Hughes, Philadelphia; two
brothers, Gerard, Selinsgrove, and Brian, Scranton; three nieces and four
nephews. The funeral will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from the Strauch Funeral Home,
602 Birch St., with Mass at 9:30 in the Church of St. Joseph, Davis Street, to
be celebrated by Rev. John M. Lapera, pastor. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
Friends may call today, 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St.
Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.
