Deceased was born in 1804 and was of Scotch Irish parentage. Mr. Hastings learned the trade of a tanner with the late John Whiteside, of Coleraine, and afterwards became a partner in the business with him. Mr. Hastings married Miss Rebecca Russell, of Lancaster, in 1833. The next year he bought a farm near Mechanics Grove, where he lived and died. Deceased was a careful and industrious man, and his management of the farm has made it very valuable. He was one of the pillars of the Chestnut Level Presbyterian church, and its oldest member. The wife and five children survive the deceased. The funeral on Thursday morning was largely attended. Rev. J. M. Galbreath conducted the services at the house. The body was buried in the Chestnut Level Cemetery. The pallbearers were James P. Evans, James G. McSparran, Ross A. McCommon, A. Scott Clark, William R. Boyd and John Penny. -- Oxford Press.
