Hegener, who was assistant under Postmaster Slaymaker, and a much esteemed citizen, is lying at his home on West King street at the point of death. He is sinking rapidly, and his demise is hourly expected. He is suffering from pneumonia. Since ten o'clock last night he has been unconscious. Prior to that he was delirious in a violent degree. About two weeks ago Mr. Hegener was attacked with "la grippe," which quickly developed into pneumonia. This morning it was reported that he was dead, and the rumor is still current this afternoon. Edward Hegener, ex-assistant postmaster, died at his home, No. 306 West King street, between six and seven o'clock, on Saturday evening, in the 40th year of his age. Just two weeks before, he had been attacked by "la grippe," which turned into pneumonia, and resulted in his death. Mr. Hegener was born in this city on June 13, 1850, and was a son of Henry Hegener, the well-known shoemaker. He was educated in the public schools of this city, and in 1866 was apprenticed to learn the printers' trade with the late Stuart A. Wylie. He remained in the same establishment under Wylie and Griest and the Inquirer Printing Company for nineteen years, becoming a first class compositor, being promoted to the position of foreman of the composing room, and finally transferred to the business office as head bookkeeper. He held that position until the latter part of July, 1885, when he was appointed assistant postmaster by Postmaster Slaymaker. He performed his duties there faithfully and well until he was superseded a short time ago by James H. Marshall. In politics he was a Democrat, and was elected by that party to the School Board in 1887. He was President of Leo XIII Beneficial Society, and Secretary of the Union Building and Loan Association. He was also a member of St. Peter's, St. Bernard's, St. Anthony's and the Conestoga Beneficial Societies. In the days of the volunteer fire department he was an active member of the Union, and was Secretary of the Union Fire Association. He was married to Ida, daughter of the late Abraham Coilins, of Marietta, who with three children survives him. The funeral will take place on Wednesday morning, at 9 o'clock; interment in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery. This evening the ex-post office officials will meet at H. E. Slaymaker's store and take action on the death of G. Edw. Hegener. The Lancaster Daily Examiner, Monday, January 20, 1890 DIED. HEGENER. January 18, 1890, at his house, No. 306 West King street, G. The relatives and friends of the family, the Lancaster School Board, also St. Michael's, Leo's, St. Bernard's, St. Peter's, and St. Anthony's societies, are respectfully invited to attend the funeral from his late residence, No. 306 West King street, on Wednesday morning at 9 o'clock.
