HESS, a citizen of Hopewell township, and well-known in the lower end of York and Lancaster counties was found lying last Friday in his orchard, where he had been trimming trees. He was carried into his house where he lay partly conscious, till 12:30 Saturday night, when he died. He had long been suffering from something like apoplexy, and it is presumed a severe stroke of this affection caused his death. His funeral took place on Wednesday. Interment at Cross Roads M. E. cemetery. Services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Mattern, assisted by Rev.---Livingston. His age was 75 years, 9 months, 5 days. Mr. HESS was the youngest son of David and Margaret HESS was was born near Penn Hill, Lancaster county in 1828. He learned the blacksmith trade with the late George Hewes. and was an expert workman in steel and edged tools. In 1849 he married Miss Rebecca Ann BROWN and shortly there after located near Pine Grove in Lower Chanceford township, where he followed his trade, and also operated a saw mill. About 1866, he sold out here and moved to Hopewell township, where he purchased a large farm. His wife died June 29, 1893. He is survived by 10 children, 5 boys, and 5 girls. Albert B., of Canton, Ohio, Elmer J. Dallastown, this county, Jackson E., Abraham Lincoln, and David Alva, of Hopewell township. Mrs. Lizzie MILLER, Mrs. Emma BARTENSLAGER, Mrs. Martha HYSON, Mrs. Mary SHEFFER and Mrs. Annie MacWILLIAMS, all living near their old home. All the children (and all their wives and husbands except one) were at the funeral. Mr. HESS was very successful in business, a man highly respected, of excellent habits, and a member of the Methodist church. A good and useful man has gone to his reward.
