A Prominent Hotel Keeper of Quarryville Dies After a Long Illness. James G. Hildebrand, proprietor of the Hildebrand hotel and one of the best known men in the lower end of the county, died at his home in Quarryville, at mindnight Tuesday. He had been in low health for some time past and had been confined to bed for about ten days. Catarrah of the stomach was the cause of his death. The deceased was 67 years of age and was born in Soudersberg, East Lampeter township, and when yet a young man engaged in the hotel business, which he followed the greater part of his life. He was proprietor of hotels at Airville, York county, Kirkwood, Conestoga Centre, Hickory Grove and Quarryville. Many years ago he kept the Railroad house in the last named place, but moved away. He returned to that town sixteen years ago and has since kept the hotel bearing his name, at which he died. Mr. Hildebrand also carried on butchering very extensively at Airville and Quarryville. The deceased was a staunch Democrat in politics and was a great lover of good horses. He was one of the original members of Washington lodge No. 156, of Masons. He leaves the following children: George and Miss Hannah, at home, and Mrs. Belle Shertz, wife of D. Miles Shertz, foreman of Charles H. Miller's soap works in this city. He was a brother of the late John Hildebrand, of New Providence, and Squire Jacob Hildebrand, of Strasburg. His surviving sisters are: Mrs. B. F. Kendig, of this city, and Mrs. Ella Kendig, of Sterling, Illinois. The funeral will take place on Saturday at 10:30, with interment at Fairfield. Lancaster Intelligencer, Wednesday, March 10, 1897
