KEEN Native of Quarryville, Dies Suddenly at His Home in Perry County After a short illness caused by influenza, developing into typhoid-pneumonia, Hiram M. Keen died at his home at Newport, Perry County, Pa., at four o'clock Saturday evening. Mr. Keen was born in Quarryville 54 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Keen, both of whom are now deceased. His father was a farmer and lime burner, the son devoting his early life to the same occupations. He was a manly man, respected and known by many people. After leaving Quarryville he went to Loysville, where he engaged in the creamery business, being associated with Amos Gilbert and I. Haines Dickinson. A number of creameries were built and operated by them in that section. Later he moved to Newport. One of the later enterprises in which he engaged was the Mifflintown Creamery plant, which manufactures and ships large quantities of ice cream. He was a director in the Newport National Bank and operated a merchantile [sic] establishment in Lansdale. His wife, who before marriage was Hannah Groff, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Groff, of Quarryville, and one son, James, in the service in France, are left. He has no brothers. His sisters are: Ella, wife of Samuel A. Keen, of Eden Township, and Misses Annie and Grace Keen, residing on the home farm adjoining the Quarryville Borough. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at Newport, after which the body will be brought to Lancaster to the home of Fred F. Groff, his brother-in-law, where further services will be held at 3 o'clock. Interment in Greenwood Cemetery. Quarryville Sun, Tuesday, March 11, 1919
