A Well-Known Lutheran Minister Stricken and Expires Suddenly in New Holland. Rev. John Kohler, D.D., a well known Lutheran minister of New Holland, and President of the Lancaster County Lutheran Conference, died suddenly at New Holland, on Monday afternoon. Rev. Kohler had just returned from Lancaster and was walking from the railroad toward his residence, when he was suddenly stricken with heart failure and fell to the ground, dying almost instantly. His age was nearly 78 years. Dr. Kohler was one of the oldest divines in Eastern Pennsylvania, having entered the ministry in 1844. He was a graduate from the Gettysburg Theological Seminary, and his first charge was at Williamsport, where he remained from 1844 to 1849. In 1850 he became pastor in New Holland, where he remained until 1864. From 1864 to 1873 he was in charge of the Trappe congregation, in Montgomery county. After this he was pastor at Stroudsburg, Mechanicsburg, and New Holland respectively--the latter being his last charge. For a few years Dr. Kohler was professor of the preparatory department of Muhlenberg College, from which institution he received his degree of D. D. He retired from active ministerial work six years ago. He is survived by a wife, whose maiden name was Louisa M. Raum, and nine children. They are as follows: Dr. John B., of New Holland; George, optician, of New Holland; Rev. Chas. Kohler, of Lima, Ohio; Luther, a lawyer, of Philadelphia; Rev. Frederick W., of New Brighton; Mrs. Louisa Brown, of Stroudsburg; Mrs. Mary Merrick, of Mechanicsburg; Misses Jennie and Annie, at home. Ephrata Reporter, Ephrata, PA, Friday Evening, April 15, 1898
