Death of Mrs. H. Reist Landis

The suddenness with which death can enter a home was again illustrated in Lititz 
last week, in the death of Mrs. Maria Hess Landis, wife of our well known 
townsman, H. Reist Landis, which occurred on Friday evening at 9 o'clock.  On 
Christman eve Mrs. Landis was one of the many who enjoyed the services held at 
the community Christmas tree at the fountain opposite the Landis home.  
Christmas morning she became ill and took her bed with what proved to be pleuro-
pneumonia.  She sank rapidly and departed this life at the aforementioned time, 
aged 63 years, 10 months and 26 days.  Mrs. Landis was a daughter of the late 
Jacob and Barbara Bomberger and was born on the old Bomberger homestead 
northwest of Lititz.  She became the wife of H. Reist Landis in 1874 and the 
couple lived happily on a farm near the place of her birth until about eleven 
years ago, when the moved to this borough.  She was a life-long and devout 
member of the Mennonite church and her demise is mourned by a large circle of 
relatives and friends.  Besides the husband the following children survive:  
Catherine, wife of Isaac B. Erb, of near Lititz; Emma, wife of Phares S. 
Newcomer, of Millersville; Elizabeth, wife of John Bomberger, of Elm; Prof. 
Jacob B. Landis, of Franklin & Marshall academy, Lancaster, and Ellen, at home.  
Six grandchildren also survive, as does a brother, Jacob H. Bomberger, and a 
sister, Mrs. Annie Snyder, both of this borough.  The funeral was held from her 
late home on Tuesday morning and was very largely attended.  Services were held 
in the Lititz Mennonite church followed by interment in the cemetery adjoining 
Erb's meeting house.  Revs. Noah Landis, Jacob H. Hershey and Jonas Hess 
officiated.
