All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/lancaster/ _______________________________________________ James McNelly, aged 92, widely known retired employee of the Pennsylvania railroad and long a prominent and respected resident of Lakemont, died at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon at the home of his daughter, Mrs. G.N.Eagan, 339 Logan Avenue, Lakemont. He was one of the oldest residents of the community and was well known to neighbors and friends as Daddy McNelly. Death was due to diseases incident to old age. Mr.McNelly was born at Gap, Lancaster county, on September 15, 1847, a son of David and Rachael (Plank) McNelly. He spent his early life there and was married April 2, 1872, to Sophie Belle Walton of Altoona, the ceremony being performed at Lancaster. Mrs. McNelly died in 1923, the year after the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Mr. McNelly was a machinist in the Altoona Works department of the Pennsylvania railroad, starting his employment in 1880 and retiring after 39 years on July 2, 1919. He worked in the Twelfth street frame shopp for many years and retired from the light plant at Ninth avenue and Thirteenth street. For many years, Mr.McNelly wintered in Florida and was active as a gardener, maintaining a garden at Lakemont in the summer and one at St.Petersburg, Fla., during the winters. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. M.P. Boggs of St.Petersburg,Fla., and Mrs. Gordon N. Eagan, at whose home he died. A son died in childhood. Eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren also survive. Friends are being received at the Eagan home. MCNELLY--- Funeral services for James McNelly of South Lakemont will be held at 2:30 o'clock Thursday afternoon at the home of a daughter,Mrs.G.N.Eagan, 339 Logan avenue, South Lakemont, by Rev. J.W.Wible. Interment in Rose Hill cemetery. Friends are being received at the Eagan home. He married Sophie Belle Walton, also of Salisbury Township. They lived from the 1870's in Altoona. They were married April 2, 1872 in Lancaster County.
