All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/pa/lancaster/ _______________________________________________ AGED RESIDENT IS CALLED BY DEATH Mrs. Barbara Elizabeth Nixdorf, one of Altoona's oldest residents, died at 12:40 o'clock this morning at the home of a son, W. H. Nixdorf, 1920 Ninth street. Mrs. Nixdorf was born in Lancaster on Jan. 22, 1948 (sic), and thus had just attained her 90th birthday anniversary prior to her death. She came to Altoona with her husband, Harry Nixdorf, in November, 1880, residing here continuously since. Mr. Nixdorf was one of Altoona's pioneer ice cream manufacturers and was the first dealer in shell oysters in the city. For a number of years he was also a leading restaurant and hotel proprietor in the city. Mr. Nixdorf died a number of years ago. Mrs. Nixdorf attended the opening of the William F. Gable company store in Altoona and still possessed her original purchase made at the opening. She had missed visiting the store on only three anniversaries since. Surviving are the son, with whom she resided; three grandchildren, C. R. Nixdorf, Mrs. S. H. Dunmire and Miss Mary Nixdorf; two great-grandchildren and one sister, Mrs. Clara Hubley of Lancaster. Mrs. Nixdorf was the oldest member of Christ Evangelical and Reformed church. The body may be viewd at the son's home.
