Barbara Oehme, daughter of the late Daniel Conrad, widow of William Oehme, was
born September 2, 1826, at New Danville, Lancaster county. When a young girl she
was received into the communicant fellowship, of the German Reformed church, at
Conestoga Centre, by the rite of confirmation, by the Rev. G. W. Glessner. On
the 25th of March, 1845, she was united in holy wedlock with her late husband,
William Washington Oehme, in the city of Lancaster. About 45 years of her
married life were spent in Lititz. Here she enjoyed the confidence and respect
of her neighbors as friends. She was a modest, unassuming child of God, a kind,
faithful wife and mother, and a sincere, consistent member of the church. In
January 1871 she was received into the communion of the Moravian church here in
Lititz. For many years she had been sadly afflicted, but her end came with
startling suddenness, on Saturday morning last, December 23, as she was crossing
from the home of one of her children to that of another. The Lord conveyed her
spirit to that home where sorrows and suffering will be known no more forever.
She was blessed with seven children, four daughters and three sons. One
daughter, Emma, on the 17th of July, 1878 preceded her to eternity. She had
thirty-seven grandchildren, thirty of whom are living. Her husband departed this
life June 4, 1893. Since his departure she lived with her children. Her age was
68 years, 3 months and 20 days.
