Mrs. Susan Slaymaker Laid to Rest in St. James Churchyard. The funeral of Mrs. Susan Slaymaker took place from the residence of her son, Henry E. Slaymaker, this morning at 11 o'clock. Only the relatives of the deceased were present. The body was encased in a cedar casket covered with black cloth. There was no hearse, no flowers, nor any of the usual trappings of a funeral. At 11 o'clock the officiating priest, Rev. Dr. Knight, and his assistant, Rev. Hardy, arrayed in their priestly garments, arrived at the house. A few minutes later the carriers, Policemen George Cramer, C. J. Stormfeltz, Andrew Eicholtz, and Ex-Policeman Charles Holman, carried the coffin from the house and placed it upon a handbier(?) and carried it to St. James church, preceded by the clergymen and followed by the mourners. Arrived at the church, which was already well filled with sympathizing friends, the casket was placed in front of the chancel. Rev. Dr. Knight and Rev. Hardy read the Protestant Episcopal burial service after which the remains of Mrs. Slaymaker were taken into the churchyard adjoining, and interred in the same grave in which reposes the remains of her husband, Stephen C. Slaymaker, who died fifty years ago. Lancaster Daily Intelligencer, Monday, May 10, 1886
