These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations. ************************************************************************ State of Pennsylvania County of Lawrence On this 28th day of March AD one thousand eight hundred and fifty-five personally appeared before me a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas within and for the County and State aforesaid Samuel Casteel aged fifty-eight years a resident of Neshannock Town, Lawrence County and State of Pennsylvania who being duly sworn according to law declares that he is the identical Samuel Casteel who was a private in the volunteer company commanded by Captain Peter Stilley in the was with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 28th day of June 1812 that he volunteered at Allegheny County in the State of Pennsylvania on or about the first day of February 1814 for or during the war and continued in active service during said war for the term of thirty six days and was honorably discharged at Pittsburgh in said State of Pennsylvania on the 8th day of March 1814 by written discharge which is lost. He makes this declaration for the purpose of attaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the act approved March 3rd 1855. He also declares that he has not received a warrant for bounty land under this or any other act of Congress nor made any other application therefor. signed Samuel Casteel We John Wallace and Isaac N. Peter Stilley's Co. Penn. Militia from 2" Feby 1814, to 3" March 1814, 18" Nov 1814, to 28" Nov 1814 Length of service But 41 days Rejected December 2", 1871, to a pension of eight dollars per month, from February 14, 1871. One Thousand Eight hundred and seventy-one, personally appeared before me Prothonotary of the Court of common Pleas a Court of record within and for the County and State aforesaid Samuel Casteel, aged 74 years, a resident of Hickory Township County of Lawrence State of Pennsylvania who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is Married, that his wife's name was Nancy Cameron to whom he was married at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 12th day of January 1816., That he served the full period of sixty days in the Military Service of the United States in the war of 1812, that he is the identical Samuel Casteel who was enrolled in Captain Peter Stilley's Company at Allegheny County Pennsylvania on the _day of October 1813 and was honorably discharged at Somerset, Pennsylvania about December 24, 1814. (Most of his service was guarding prisoners taken by Gen's Harrison and Perry and marching to Baltimore.) That he, at no time during the late rebellion against the Authority of the United States, adhered to the cause of the enemies of the government giving them aid or comfort; or exercised the function of any office whatever under any authority, or pretended authority in hostility to the United States; and that he will support the constitution of the United states; that he is not in receipt of a pension under any previous act; that he makes this declaration for the purpose of being placed on the pension roll of the United States, under the provision of the Act approved February 14th, 1871, and he hereby constitutes and appoints with full power of the substitution and revocation J. W. Reynolds of New Castle, Pennsylvania his true and lawful Attorney to prosecute his claim and obtain the pension certificate that may be issued; that his post office is at New Castle, Lawrence County, Pennsylvania; that his domicile or place of abode is Hickory Township, Lawrence County Penn signed Samuel Casteel Applicant Also personally appeared Robert Cameron and Robert Cochram residents of Lawrence County Pennsylvania persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit who being duly sworn, say: They were present and saw Samuel Casteel the claimant sign his name to the foregoing declaration that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of said claimant and their acquaintance with him that he is the identical person he represents himself to be that at no time during the late rebellion against the authority of the United States did he adhere to the cause of the enemies of the Government giving them aid or comfort and that they have no interest in the prosecution of this claim. signed Robert Cameron; Robert Cochram Sworn to and subscribed before me this 6th day of March 1871 and I hereby certify that the contents of the above declaration & were fully made known and explained to the applicant and witnesses before swearing, including the blanks left unfilled as to No. of company, regiment and division, and that I have no interest, direct or indirect, in the prosecution of this claim. signed ? Rejected --Reopened --Act of March 9, 1878 State of Pennsylvania County of Lawrence Personally appeared before me Prothonotary of the Court of common Pleas in and for the county and state aforesaid Samuel Casteel who being duly sworn according to law saith that he served as a private in captain Peter Stilley's Company Pennsylvania Militia in the war of 1812 from the 2nd day of February A.D. 1814 to the 3rd day of march A.D. 1814, when he was detailed by William Irish the United States Marshal at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to assist "Brown Barker and Butler" to Mount cannon for the United States that he said Casteel was a blacksmith and that he served 42 days in the workshop at Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in Mounting Cannon by the direction of said United States Marshall-and that at the end of said term of 42 days he was discharged till further orders. And that he again served in his said Company from the 18th day of November A.D. 1814 to the 28th day of November A.D. 1814 when the records of the War Department at Washington City states that said "Casteel" was discharged. John Wallace served in the same Company from the 2nd day of February 1814 to the 13th day of March A.D. 1814. And if he said Casteel had not been detailed as above stated he would have been marked on the rolls as a deserter from the 3rd of March 1814 to the 13th March 1814, the time of the discharged of this company and that he served the full term of 41 days in the ranks as a Soldier and 42 days detailed mounting cannon-making in all 83 days. That his application for Pension is No 8283 in Pension Office signed Samuel Casteel Sworen subscribed before me the 11th day of June 1878 and I certify that I have no interest in the claim of said Casteel for a pension. signed ?
