M. shabodeho@aol.com September 12, 2009, 7:57 pm Published in the Daily Herald, Tyrone, Pa. on 8/30/1888 William Pitzer 8/30/1888 Daily Herald, Pg. 1 NEW CASTLE, Pa., Aug. 28.—Owing to the failure of the flagman to put out the proper signal, the second section of a freight train on the Pittsburgh and Western crashed into the caboose of the first section, which had stopped to take water, at Bessemer station, about two miles above Mahoningtown, at 5 o'clock this morning. William Pitzer, brakeman,who was asleep in the caboose, was instantly killed, his body being terribly mangled. The engineer and fireman escaped by jumping.
