David Brightbill, bicycle manufacturer, of this city, was yesterday arrested at 
Miners' Village by County Detective Sattazahn, charged with having assisted John 
Ada Brightbill and Samuel K. Engle in an effort to escape from the Lebanon 
county jail during Monday night, and with having smuggled into jail ------ the 
shape of saws, etc.  Alderman Miller, who issued the warrant, committed the 
accused to jail in default of $1,000 bail for a hearing on Saturday.  District 
Attorney McCurdy represents the Commonwealth, and J. E. Reinoehl, esq., the 
defendant.

It is alleged that Brightbill visited the jail on Saturday, when he smuggled the 
tools to the prisoners, having had them concealed under his clothes.

Both prisoners are charged with the serious crime of rape.  They began work for 
their liberty during Saturday night.  Their plan was to saw the bars above a 
window in the corridor.  On Sunday Sheriff Oberholtzer discovered that an 
attempt was being made by these prisoners to regain their freedom, and he kept a 
close watch, consequently preventing an escape.  They will now have to endure 
solitary confinement as the penalty of their abuse of the sheriff's kindness in 
allowing them the freedom of the corridor.


IN ALDERMANIC COURTS

David Swanger, of Pleasant Hill, was arrested yesterday afternoon by Constable 
Sattazahn, charged with betrayal by Catherine Reager, of the same place.  The 
accused furnished $500 bail before Alderman Miller for court.

William Harris, colored, of Philadelphia, who was arrested by Special P. & R. 
Officer George Wartman, of Reading, on Thursday of last week, charged with 
picking a gold watch from the pocket of Mrs. John Arndt, of Harrisburg, just as 
she boarded a train for that city, was arraigned before Alderman Snyder 
yesterday afternoon, charge with larceny.  He was recommitted to jail for court.

Yesterday afternoon Robert Krause, Morris Brandt and Oscar Bankey had a hearing 
before Alderman Miller on the charge of larceny of pigeons preferred by Peter H. 
Fox, of this city.  Sufficient evidence was presented to hold the accused.  
Krause and Bankey were committed for court and Brandt furnished $100 bail for 
court.

Mahlon Killinger yesterday made information before Alderman Miller, charging 
George Feaser, of the Fifth ward, with assault and battery.  The warrant was 
issued to County Detective Sattazahn and the accused will be asked to furnish 
bail for a hearing later in the week.

Harvey H. Baney, residing at Ebenezer, was arrested yesterday by Detective 
Sattazahn, on a warrant issued by Alderman Miller, charged with betrayal by 
Hannah Putt, of West Lebanon.  The accused furnished $500 bail for September 
court.

Yesterday afternoon Wilhelm Barth, of this city, was arraigned before Alderman 
Miller, charged with surety of the peace by his wife, Fredericka Barth.  The 
charge was withdrawn and the costs, amounting to $3.11, were paid by the 
prosecutrix.
