LOCAL HAPPENINGS

  Nathan Dubble and George Smith left for Kansas where they expect to find 
employment.  Accompanying them as far as Ohio, were Solomen Derr and son 
Samuel.
  Kold & Sons, of this place, artesian well drillers, are at work at 
Harrisburg on an artesian well to be drilled to a depth of a thousand feet, 
on the Allison Hill premises of a Harrisburg ice manufacturing company.  The 
job will take a long while to complete.
  Mrs. Ellen Coover is in receipt of an invitation from her daughter, Mrs. 
Wm. Francis of Fort Collins, Colorado, requesting her presence at a 
millinery opening, on October 7th.  Mrs. Francis has opened rooms and will 
conduct the millinery business in above city.
  Frank Friend was held in #300 bail for court upon a charge of malicious 
mischief preferred by John Friddell proprietor of the Franklin House.  The 
trial was held before Squire Himmelberger.  The accused was represented by 
Attorney Houncker.  John Walborn, went his surety.
  Joseph Matt, Jr., of Lebanon, and Miss Annie Stamm, of this place were 
united in marriage yesterday in St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lebanon.  The 
bride is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David Stamm of this place and for 
several years was employed as a waitress in the hotel Savoy above city.  The 
couple will reside in Lebanon.
  Ground has been broken for the foundations of the first building of the 
recently organized Christ Chain Works to be located at Avon.  All of the 
buildings will be erected with concrete blocks which will necessitate eight 
carloads of cement.  Machines for the manufacture of the blocks are being 
placed on the grounds.
  On Monday evening Mrs. Jacob Sechrist residing east of town was tendered a 
surprise party on the anniversary of her birthday.  The lady in company with 
a neighbor spent part of the evening shopping at this place and upon 
arriving home she found the house well filled with friends.  A social good 
time was enjoyed by all.  Refreshments were served.

SUPERVISORS ORGANIZE

  Fifteen road supervisors, who were indicted by the grand jury at the 
recent Quarter Sessions' Court, on charges of neglecting the highways in 
their respective districts, on Saturday afternoon formed an organization for 
common defense, and retained counsel with that end in view.
  Five townships are involved in the suits, and five attorneys have been 
retained.  They are:  E. D. Siegrist, J. G. Adams, Harry A. Honker, Elmer E. 
McCurdy and Dawson W. Light.
  Messrs. Morris S. Uhrich, Jonathan H. Yeiser and Edward Spangler, road 
supervisors of this township, are included among the fifteen who were 
indicted and are likewise numbered among the defendants.

PERSONALS

  Prof. and Mrs. J. P. Stober were visitors of friends in Reading over 
Sunday.
  Mrs. Charles Ziebach of Pottsville, was the guest of her parents Mr. and 
Mrs. Levi Yeiser.
  William H. Tice and wife returned from a visit to the Jamestown 
Exposition.
  Mrs. Rev. Calvin Staudt of Chicago, Ill., is here the guest of her mother, 
Mrs. Cassia Donges.
  Mrs. C. L. German was the guest of Harvey Speck and family at 
Fredericksburg during the week.
  Dr. Addison Bower sold the building lot, corner of Railroad and Washington 
Sts., to Harry Klopp.
  Wm. Dubble purchased the Gibble farm, adjoining his other farm.  His son 
Harry, will move thereon.
  A postal card shower was given to Sallie Yoder on Saturday in honor of her 
seventeenth birthday.  She received 95 fine cards from friends in 
Shoemakersville, Reading, Altoona, Richland, Lebanon and Myerstown.
  Corl & Manderbach, at private sale, purchased from Dr. Addison Bower a 50-
foot lot, adjoining the A. S. Valentine & Son cigar factory, upon which they 
will erect a sweating house to be used in connection with the cigar factory.
