APPRENTICE REMEMBERED

  Herbert Hamer, apprentice in the barber shop of Harry Line was made the 
recipient of a Christmas gift from the patrons amounting to sixteen dollars 
in coin.  A small box neatly covered with crepe paper had been placed 
against the wall of the shop over which was placed a card bearing the words 
"Christmas box for apprentice" and into which the coin was dropped.  
Saturday following Christmas the box was opened and $13.00 counted therefrom 
in denominations of 25, 10, 5, and 1 cent.  Three dollars were given 
personally to Mr. Hammer by patrons.

APPOINTMENTS OF COUNTY OFFICES

  William J. Noll who for the past 1 1/2 years served Lebanon county as 
Deputy Revenue Collector, resigned the position to accept the clerkship to 
the County Commissioners.  Mr. Noll received his appointment at the 
organization meeting of the newly elected Commissioners, last Monday.  
Together with this fat office the yearly salary of Mr. Noll was increased to 
$1500 or $150 more than what was previously paid.  Mr. Noll will continue 
residing at this place.  Other appointments made by the commissioners was 
that of Eugene D. Siegrist to succeed W. W. Walter as Solicitor.  Dr. Geo. 
S. Fisher successor to Dr. G. M. Focht as prison physician; John K. Fertig 
succeeding Dr. A. C. Hersh as tax collector, and the reappointment of Samuel 
Trafford as prison warden.
  Recorder elect S. F. Engle reappointed William S. Bordelmay as deputy.  
William R. Bubb elected register of wills deputized U. G. Kreider and J. H. 
Kochenderfer and clerk of orphan's court Wentling, deputized John H. 
Kochenderfer and U. G. Kreider; treasurer Charles Weiss deputized T. G. 
Spangler.  The poor directors made these appointments:  Steward, John Light; 
assistant steward, Frank Zinner; matron, Mrs. John Light; treasurer, John 
Borgner; physician and clerk, Dr. A. J. Reigel; solicitor, Grant W. 
Nitrauer, esq.

RUNAWAY HORSE FRACTURES MAN'S LEG

  John H. Miller, Jr., member of the firm of F. P. Miller & Bro., 
proprietors of the Gem Bakery, East Main St., is confined to bed with 
injuries he sustained in a runaway accident on Wednesday morning.  The horse 
of Ellsworth Livingood, of near Stouchsburg, took fright near the building 
in course of erection for S. Liebovitz & Sons and in its efforts to get away 
tore the harness, which freed the animal from the wagon.  Mr. Miller, who 
was returning to his place of business, made an effort to catch the horse as 
it ran on the pavement in front of the Stager property.  The animal reared 
and felled Mr. Miller and with its heavy weight tread on his left leg, 
causing a bad fracture of the tibia bone slightly above the ankle, besides 
he sustained lacerations at the back of his head due to the fall.
  Mr. Miller was carried to his home by Mr. Livingood and J. J. Moyer, where 
he was given medical attention by Dr. H. D. Miller, assisted by Dr. 
Holsberger of Lebanon.
  In its efforts to get away the horse passed thru an open gate at the side 
of the Stager property and then ran thru a fence leading into the alley.  
The shafts of the wagon was broken and the harness torn.  

SCHAEFFERSTOWN

  The Alumni and Alumnae of the Highschool held their second annual banquet 
in the Central hotel parlors, last Wednesday evening.  A sumptuous set out 
was prepared by landlord Fetter and his guests testified to their 
appreciation of the good things prepared.  Toasts were responded and the 
occasion was one of marked enjoyment and good spirits.
  Our students, Misses Ida S. Lauser, Marie Zerbe, Annie Hickernell and Emma 
Bachman, and Messrs. Miles Krumbine, Chas. B. Hartman, Taylor Zerbe, Harry 
B. Schaeffer, George Dulabone and T. Royce Brendle, who spent the holiday 
vacation with their respective parents, have all returned to the respective 
institutions to resume their studies.
  Catechetical classes were organized Saturday afternoon by Revs. Schantz 
and Bachman, pastors of the Lutheran and Reformed churches, respectively.
  Camp 256, P. O. S. of A., elected the following officers to serve for the 
ensuing term:  P. P. Albright Fetter; P., of F., Wm. M. Smith; Treasurer, 
Geo. F. Corl; R. S, M. A. Fetter; F. S. E. H. Hammer; Trustee, J. H. 
Hickernell; I. G., Philip Krall; G. Harry Corl.

MT AETNA

  Rev. Hertzel, of Fredericksburg, was here visiting some of his members.
  Wm. Blecker, horse dealer, of Lebanon was in this section buying horses.
  The property of the late Catharine Lesher was sold at public sale on 
Saturday afternoon at the Brown's House by Davilla Lesher, administrator, to 
George Hower for $235.
  Misses Mary Schlasman and Bertha Klopp left on Monday for the Kutztown 
Normal School.
  Charles Moyer bought a carload of horses in this neighborhood for Charles 
Jost, of Phila.
