Fitzgerald, a retired army officer, who won distinction as an Indian fighter in the United States Army, and who was prominent for many years in the clubs and social circles of Lebanon, died very suddenly at his home in that city Tuesday morning, aged 70 yrs. Heart trouble is ascribed, as the cause of death. Major Fitzgerald was born in Ireland and came to this country when he was 9 years old. At the age of 18 years he enlisted in the army and served until 1869, when he was discharged with the rank of captain. He made a record in the Red Cloud Indian Agency, where he was located for several years. He was seriously wounded in an Indian campaign and was in service at Big Horn Mountain, at Fort McKinney when he was discharged because of wounds. He came to Lebanon in 1889 and in 1895 was elected commander of the Lebanon Rifles. He was prominent in social circles of the city and was vice-president of the Lebanon Club, prominent in the Lebanon Lodge of Elks, a member of the Loyal Legion Society of the Potomac and the Grand Army of the Republic. Major Fitzgerald is survived by a wife, three children and two sisters, the sisters residing in Boston. The funeral will take place to-day. The remains will be forwarded to Washington, D. C., and interment made on Arlington National Cemetery. Myerstown Enterprise, December 06, 1907
