He rode for gangster Al Capone in Havana in the 1930's and later lost his life's investments in property to revolution. 1958 he and his family lived in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, but went to Cuba for Christmas with relatives. Then Fidel Castro seized power. What followed were weeks of grilling by authorities before he could return home. He lost everything, applied for U. S. citizenship and never returned to Cuba. Back in New England, he became a legenc as the journeyman jockey who rode Charlie Boy to almost all of the horse's 58 victories." Retired as a jockey in 1968 and became a trainer. "He launched a racing stable with his son Jose, who eventually took over the family business and currently is a leading trainer at Penn National Race Course, Grantville".
