Long Jr., 36, of 7641 Lancaster Ave., Myerstown, Pa., died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2007, in a motor-vehicle accident on Route 501 in Jackson Township, Pa. He was the husband of Daphne K. Makaila Long to whom he was married for 14 years on June 4. Born in Lancaster, Pa., on Oct. 12, 1971, he was the son of Nelson N. and Shirley Fessler Long. He was a 1990 graduate of Elco High School where he excelled as a lineman for the Elco Raiders football team in the late 1980s. After graduation he entered the Marine Corps in Hawaii, serving from 1990-94. While in the Marines he served in Desert Storm and Somalia. In 1994, after his discharge from the Marines, he joined the Army National Guard. He began serving with the 121st Transportation Co. of Lebanon, then transferred to the 131st Transportation Co. in Williamstown. As a sergeant first class, he then joined with the 1067th Transportation Co. of Phoenixville where he was deployed to Fort Dix, N.J. from 2004-06. He was currently deployed in the 213th Air Defense Artillery Battalion of Spring City, Pa., where he served in Iraq. For his heroic effort in saving the lives of three people in October 2006, he was honored with the Liberty USO Service Member of the Year Award of the U.S. Army. Because of his actions in Iraq, he was also a recipient of the Bronze Star with Valor Device. After serving one year in Iraq, he returned home in September. Last month, fans at the EaglesBears game in Philadelphia watched as he was honored as a "hometown hero" on the Jumbotron screen. He worked as a truck driver at AWI, Robesonia, Pa., for 14 years and was a member of Friedens Lutheran Church, Myerstown. He was a member of the Polar Bear Club where he enjoyed participating in the polarbear jump on New Year's Day at Millardsville Quarry. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and his dogs. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by a son, Neil K. Long, at home; stepdaughter Mandy K. Griffe of Lebanon; stepson Lopaka K. Kimura of Myerstown; stepgranddaughter Annelia K. Griffe of Lebanon; sisters JoAnne, wife of Scott Swanger of Myerstown; Valerie, wife of Robert Hauck of Lebanon; and Melissa, wife of Kevin Kochinsky of Reading; halfsisters Dania, wife of Jack Kincaid, and Kara, wife, of Dave Schlosser, both of Washington; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Nov. 15, 2007, at 4 p.m. in Grose Funeral Home, 358 W. Washington Ave., Myerstown, Pa. There will be no viewing. Family will receive friends Thursday at 2 p.m. Interment will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, East Hanover Township. Please meet at Grose Funeral Home Friday at 10 a.m. to proceed to cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Neil K. Long Trust Fund, c/o Fulton Bank, 200 W.
