Runkel, 80, of 400 Dogwood lane, West Cornwall, passed away on October 17th, 2007, in the Lebanon Veterans Medical Hospice Center. He was born on February 1, 1926, in Quentin, Pa. He was the son of the late Leroy and Edith Hoke Runkel and was of the Christian faith. He graduated from Cornwall High School in 1944. Bob was a corporal in the United States Marine Corps and served his country in the invasion of Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, during World War II. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946. His life's work was as a carpenter / general contractor. He was known throughout the area as a craftsman with integrity who provided quality work and innovative design. Bob was a member of the Annville American Legion, a charter member of the Log Hollow Hunting Club and a life member of the NRA. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter. He enjoyed travel throughout the country but especially enjoyed the western part of the U.S. Reading about world history was a favorite pastime. Bob was an advocate for conservation of our natural surroundings for future generations. Surviving are his lifelong adopted family Mabel Harkins; her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Juanita Harkins of West Cornwall; their son and daughter-in-law Dr. Seth Harkins and Dr. Jennifer Lee of Bethesda, Md.; his nephews Richard Runkel of Hummelstown, Scott and James Enck of Lititz. Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Doris Enck of Lititz and brother John Runkel of Hummelstown. Memorial services will be held Monday at Christman's Funeral Home, 226 Cumberland Street, Lebanon. Viewing from 11:30-12:30 with services at 12:30 p.m. Burial with full military honors will follow at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Lebanon Veterans Medical Hospice Center, 1700 S.
