Welling, 83, of Womelsdorf, Pa., died Thursday, December 27, at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, Pa. He was born December 5, 1924, in Washington, D.C., a son of the late David and Gladys Welling. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served as a landing craft coxswain during allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily and various South Pacific islands. He served as a purchasing agent for a manufacturing firm in Minnesota and for the National Institutes of Health in Maryland. He was active as a youth sports coach, Cub Scout troop leader, Mason and frequent fan for his grandchildren's sports activities. He is survived by H. Ann Welling, to whom he was married for over 50 years; son Craig Welling and his wife Carter of Fairfax Station, Va.; son Blake Welling of Royersford, Pa.; daughter Terri Sporrong and husband James of Plymouth, Minn., and grandchildren Judith Welling, Anne Welling, David Welling, Blake M. Welling, Kristin Welling, Adam Sporrong and wife Kaci, and Jill Utrup and husband Nicholas. The family held a private gathering on December 28, 2007. An inurnment service will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a future date. Thompson Funeral Home Inc., 126 S. Ninth St., Lebanon, Pa., is in charge of arrangements.
