"Ben" Aungst, age 87, of Waterbridge at Pine Grove, Pa., passed away Sunday, December 21, 2008, in the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon. Born January 6, 1921, in Pine Grove, Pa., he was the son of the late Charles and Gertrude Hummel Aungst. Ben was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Pine Grove, and was a graduate of Pine Grove High School. He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the 77th Air Service Sq. Ben was an interpreter during his time overseas, and was a truck driver. He received the Good Conduct Medal, the American Theater Service Medal, the EAME Theater Service Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a life member of the Pine Grove American Legion Post 374. Ben worked as a machinist for the former Fox-Knapp Mfg. in Pine Grove, retiring in 1986. From 1989 until 2007, he served as the local registrar in the Pine Grove area. He was a life member of the Hose, Hook & Ladder Fire Co. No. 1, Pine Grove; a member of the I.O.O.F. and the Grundsow Lodge. Preceding him in death were three brothers, Henry Aungst, Phaon Aungst, Charles Aungst; and a sister, Thelma Bolton. Surviving are his wife, Helen Noll Aungst of Pine Grove; nieces and nephews. Services will be held in St. Peter's Lutheran Church Wednesday, December 24, 2008, at 11 a.m. with Dr. Richard Schoenleber officiating. Friends will be received Wednesday, December 24, 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. at the St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Pine Grove, Pa. Interment will follow in the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa. In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer contributions to St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 312 S. Tulpehocken St., Pine Grove, PA 17963, in his memory.
