"Butch" Bell, 91, of Hummelstown died Monday, July 28, 2008, in the M.S. Hershey Medical Center. Born September 24, 1916, in North Londonderry Township, Lebanon County, he was a son of the late Michael E. and Martha B. (Heisey) Bell. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Anna Bell Light; brother Lloyd; and son Karl. Ammon and Lloyd were co-owners of Bell's Meat Market in Hummelstown, which served fine meats to the surrounding communities for over 75 years. Ammon retired from the business at the age of 86. He graduated from the former Hummelstown High School in 1933, and worked at the meat market until he was drafted into the U.S. Army in November of 1941, where he served in the 9th Ordinance Unit in the Southern European Theater. Ammon was renowned for his shooting career, which brought him local as well as national fame. He made the Pennsylvania State High Power Rifle Team in 1935, and attended the national matches in Camp Perry, Ohio, winning his first leg toward the Distinguished Rifle Medal, the highest award given by the war department. In 1952, he earned his distinguished rating. In 1957, he returned to Camp Perry and was National Bolt Rifle champion. In 1958, President Eisenhower congratulated him when he won the President's Match, and in 1959, he again won the National Bolt Rifle Championship. He continued to participate in many local, state, regional and national matches throughout the years, and was inducted into the Capital Area Chapter of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame for his marksmanship skills. Ammon was a lifelong member of the NRA, Hummelstown Sporting Association, Harrisburg Hunters and Anglers, Hummelstown American Legion Post 265, and Hummelstown VFW Post 1687. He was an active member of the Hanoverdale Church of the Brethren, Hummelstown, and a former rotarian. He was loved, and will be greatly missed, by his devoted and loving wife of 62 years, Ruth A. (Umberger) Bell; his daughter, Elaine Dugan of Naperville, Illinois; his sons, Donald, husband of Sandy, and Jack, husband of Sheri, all of Hummelstown; and his grandchildren, Adam Bell, Brad Bell, Melissa, wife of Jason Kim, Ryan Dugan and Matthew Bell. He is also survived by his sisters, Erma, wife of Jon Forry of Lititz, and Esther Bell of Reading; and brotherin-law Earl Light of Hershey. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, August 2, 2008, at his church, 577 Hershey Road, Hummelstown. Viewings will be held 6 – 8 p.m. Friday at Buse Funeral Home, 2 East Main Street, Hummelstown, and 9 a.m. until time of services Saturday at the church. Burial will be in Hanoverdale Cemetery.
