Bomberger, 89, of Palmyra, Pa., died peacefully on March 17, 2008, at Lebanon Valley Brethren Home, surrounded by his loving family. He was a retired Church of the Brethren pastor and denominational executive. Born in Lebanon County near Rocherty, he was the son of the late Howard B. and Venona Zug Bomberger. He was a graduate of Lebanon High School, Pa., Elizabethtown College, Pa., Bethany Theological Seminary, Chicago, Ill., and the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Gettysburg, Pa. Bethany Seminary awarded him an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in 1965. He began his ministry in 1939 in the Annville Church of the Brethren, and in May of 1999, was honored for 60 years of service in the ministry. Prior to his ministerial career, he was involved in farming and in radio and television engineering in Kansas City, Mo., and Chicago, Ill. Harold also served pastorates in Allentown, Pa., Westminster, Md., and McPherson, Kan. During the 1950s, he was the executive for the Eastern Region of the Church of the Brethren. Following the McPherson, Kan., pastorate during the 1960s, he returned to his native area in 1971 to be the executive of the Atlantic Northeast District of the Church of the Brethren, from which he retired in 1983. In retirement, he served as interim pastor to seven Pennsylvania congregations in Harrisburg, Lancaster, Pine Grove, Loganville, Everett, Rehersburg, and Palmyra. Throughout his career, Dr. Bomberger was active in denominational and inter-denominational ministries. He served on the Church of the Brethren General Board, the committee on interchurch relations, the standing committee of annual conference, and was elected moderator, the denomination's highest elective office, for the 1971 annual conference held in St. Petersburg, Fla., In addition, he served as the president of the Kansas Council of Churches, was active on the Pennsylvania Council of Church's Governing Board and many of its committees, including the state pastor's conference committee, was one of the charter members of the Pennsylvania Conference on Interchurch Cooperation, and was the president of the Alumni Association of Elizabethtown College. In 1980, Pastor Bomberger was cited for his many years of leadership as a member of the Board of Directors of Mennonite Mental Health Services, and in 1993, he was named "Peacemaker of the Year" by the Brethren Peace Fellowship of the Atlantic Northeast District. More recently, he was a member of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of the Biblical Archeological Society, on the executive committee of Lebanon County Christian Ministries, and a member of the program committee of the Mt. Gretna Camp Meeting Association. He was also a charter member and past president of the Mt. Gretna Rotary Club, and as a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, he enjoyed the opportunity to visit many overseas clubs. Harold's church-related travels took him to the countries of Ecuador, Mexico, British Isles, Northern Ireland, and Nigeria. Study tours were made to the Middle East, Jerusalem, Oxford, England, and St. Andrews in Scotland, as well as an archeological dig in Akko, Israel. In 1967, he was an exchange preacher to the British Isles, which included an invitation for him and his wife to attend Queen Elizabeth's garden party at Buckingham Palace, and a later audience with Pope Paul V of Italy. Surviving are Betty, his loving wife of 64 years; sons Timothy and his wife Debbie of Lewisberry, Pa., Lane and his wife Anita of McPherson, Kan.; and daughter Venona Detrick and her husband Joe of Loganville, Pa. Also surviving are sisters, Dorothy Gottshall of Surfside, S.C., and Ruth Dersch of Grand Rapids, Mich. He cherished time spent with his nine grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. Three younger brothers, Russell Z., Cyrus Y. of Lebanon County, and Dr. Howard B. of Canfield, Ohio, preceded him in death. A celebration of his life will be held at the Annville Church of the Brethren on Monday, March 24, at 3 p.m. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
