"Gene" Carpenter Sr., 75, of Penryn, Pa., formerly of Rexmont, Pa., went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 20, 2008, at Essa Flory Hospice Center in Lancaster, Pa., surrounded by his family. Born in Rexmont, he was the son of the late Arthur G. and Kathryn A. Emerich Carpenter. He was married to M. Laverne Ogle Carpenter for 53 years on December 18th. He is remembered by his family as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. Gene was a member of Conestoga Valley Church of Christ in Lancaster. He served his country by serving in the United States Army. He was employed by the former RaybestosManhattan Company in Manheim, where he manufactured asbestos for brake lining, and was a union steward. Previously, he was employed by Morgantown Grace Ore Mines, where he mined iron ore. An avid hunter and fisherman, he was a member of Elstonville Sportsmen Association. Gene was a devoted New York Yankees fan, and twice attended World Series games to watch the Yankees play. He also was a Chicago Bears football fan. In addition to playing card games, he enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Dawn L., wife of Edwin F. Motter of Stevens, and Beth A., wife of Bradley B. Ulrich of Ephrata; a son, Carl E. Jr., husband of Davonna J. Miller Carpenter of Penryn; seven grandchildren, Jason, Justin, Jeremy, Zachary, Chelsea, Joshua, and Madalyne; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, Sterling, husband of Joan Carpenter of Rexmont, Herman Carpenter of Quentin, and William, husband of Denyse Carpenter of Cornwall; and six sisters, Janet Lightner of Quentin, Elizabeth, wife of Charles Gainer of Rexmont, Joyce, wife of Kenneth Fortna of Jonestown, Linda, wife of Samuel Gass of Lebanon, Fern, wife of Jeffrie Marley of Rexmont, and Bonnie, wife of Eugene Swanger of Cornwall. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Donald, Howard, and Robert; and three sisters, Doris Tribioli, Shirley Seachrist, and Dawn Carpenter. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday morning, July 22, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Conestoga Valley Church of Christ, 2045 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, Pa., with Carl E. Carpenter Jr. officiating. Interment will be in Penryn Cemetery, Penryn, Pa. Friends may call at the church on Tuesday morning from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service. The family requests that flowers please be omitted.
