CARPER Whether he was hiking in the Alps, sizing up an approach shot on a golf course, harvesting vegetables with his grandchildren, or watching lions up close in the wild, John M. Carper loved being outdoors. Raised in a small town in Pennsylvania Dutch country, he marveled in his adult years at how small the world is. On safari in Kenya with a grandson, he met a man who worked in the same law office as his soon-tobe stepson. Closer to home, he found similar connections among his neighbors at the Leisure World community. Dr. Carper, 82, died Oct. 18, 2008 from complications related to a previous stroke, at the Brooke Grove Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Sandy Spring, MD. Formerly of Silver Spring, MD, he also lived in Lancaster, PA, Wellesley, MA and Frankfurt, Germany. He was born at home in Palmyra, PA, on May 2, 1926, the son of Frank and Ella Ebersole Carper. After graduating from Juniata College, he earned a Doctor of Medicine degree from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, thanks to the GI Bill. (Dr. Carper served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1946-47). Following a pediatric residency at the Mayo Clinic, he established a private practice in Lancaster, PA, and served as chief of pediatrics at Lancaster General Hospital from 1963 to 1968. He was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Carper met Jane Reidenbaugh of Lititz, PA, when they were both 12, at a summer camp. Ten years later, they wed and were married nearly 51 years, until her death in 1999. In 2000, he married Iris Berry of Silver Spring, MD. In 1968, he moved his family to Wellesley, MA to pursue a fellowship in family medicine at Harvard and Children<1>?Ts Hospital. Later, he took a job with the Harvard Community Health Plan, one of the nation<1>?Ts first HMOs. He became director of Adolescent Medicine at Boston City Hospital, was an associate professor in clinical pediatrics at Boston University Medical School, and was medical director of the NewtonWellesley-Weston Multiservice Center. He wrote and spoke frequently on the subject of child abuse and teen pregnancy. In 1981, he joined the U.S. Army (willingly, this time) and served until 1991 when he retired with the rank of Colonel. He and his wife were stationed in Germany, where he directed the Army<1>?Ts Frankfurt Youth Health Center until 1984. He returned to Massachusetts to serve as Chief of Medicine at Ft. Devens <1>?" Cutler Army Hospital from 1984-5, and then transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. When he retired, he was the chief of the Adolescent Clinic. He was an avid golfer, hiker, photographer, vegetable gardener, traveler and reader. In the 1960s, he packed his family into a Plymouth station wagon and embarked on long driving vacations to Colorado and California, and elsewhere in the West and New England. In his retirement, he hiked the Swiss and French Alps with his sons and daughter. Dr. Carper and Iris traveled throughout Europe, South America and Hawaii, sometimes in the company of their grandchildren. He is survived by his four children: Joseph (Susan McKittrick), Lexington, MA; Ann (Beth McKinnon), Washington, DC; Jim (Penny), Glencoe, IL; and John (Lisa), Roslindale, MA. He is also survived by a sister, Miriam Frey (Palmyra, PA), four grandchildren - Matthew and Katherine (Lexington, MA) and William and Jane (Roslindale, MA) - and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his wife and her five children: Michael (Janet St. Clair), Bedford, NH; Daniel (Patricia), Silver Spring, MD.; Jim, Frederick, MD; Hugh, Baltimore; and Mark Arlington, VA; and her 13 grandchildren. Services were private. Memorial contributions may be sent to: Brookside Gardens, Attention: Stephanie Oberle, 1800 Glenallan Ave., Wheaton, MD 20902.
