Miller shabodeho@aol.com November 5, 2008, 7:52 pm Published in the Lebanon Daily News on 10/19/2008 Daniels, Helen J. Helen J. (nee Stein) Daniels, of West Chester and Bethel died Thursday, October 16, 2008, peacefully at home. She was born in Bethel, Pennsylvania, on March 24, 1926, to her loving parents, Ida and William Stein. She graduated from Bethel High School, where she loved to learn, and passed on her knowledge to her friends, family, beloved co-workers, and daughter, Karen L. Stein. A track and field athlete, Helen loved to play basketball, and she her love of sports continued throughout her life. She met her future husband, George, at Indiantown Gap during the Korean War, and they lived happily together until he went to be with his departed family June 2003. They shared dancing, tennis, bowling at the Goodwill Fire Company in Myerstown, and at Cedar Lanes in Lebanon, travel, and chasing his model airplanes. She and her husband worked as office manager and in shipping at Publix Shirt Co. in Myerstown, until the company closed. Helen started another career for 20 years at Trainer's Midway Diner in Bethel as hostess, where she was loved, and is still remembered every day by her friends, the staff, and her customers. Helen was a role model to her only child, Karen. She sacrificed to put her daughter through college, so that Karen could achieve Helen's goal of being a teacher. They always had a loving relationship, and were best friends, shopping together, going to the movies, and doing girl stuff. She planted a spectacular flower garden every year full of tulips, gladiolas, and sweet Williams. Helen loved all animals - the foxes and the deer - and took care of stray cats. While she lived with her daughter, Helen loved to be with her feline companions, who adored her. She was instrumental in founding the Christ Free Evangelical Free Church, which she loved attending every Sunday with her husband, George, and sister, Pearl (bottom right of sisters' church photo). She read the bible and followed its principles. Everyone loved Helen in her hometowns of Schubert and Bethel. When she moved to West Chester in 2005 to be with her daughter, she made friends everywhere - the senior center, bowling league, the wonderful North Hills Exercise Center staff, all of the caring health care practitioners, the attentive SarahCare Day Dare staff, her dance instructor, Valerie, her county friends, her special friends, Paul, Pat, and Cindy, and her caregiver, Evelyn. Evelyn and mother sang, played piano, went to the movies, took walks, exercised, and were best friends as soon as they met. Everyone had a special bond with Helen. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sweet sisters, Mae and Pearl; her brother, Bobby; and her niece, Yvonne. Helen has fond memories of going dancing with her remaining sister Jean, and tending the goats and playing with the cats at her brother Lee's. The remaining nieces and nephews remember Helen as a kind, fashionable, funny, and helpful aunt. Flowers can be sent for the services, or in lieu of flowers, plant flowers in memoriam to Helen, to spread her love of flowers and beautify the world as she did. Or spay, neuter, hug, or adopt an animal to be loved as Helen did. Arrangements are being handled by Hill Funeral Home at 111 Godfrey Road in Rehrersburg, Pennsylvania, 610-6783461/717-933-4316. After the viewing from 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 25, 2008, a pastor from the Christ Evangelical Free Church will lead the service. Her daughter encourages Helen's family and friends to honor her mother by speaking about how Helen impacted their lives. Karen also hopes that each person will privately remember the love of a parent. Following the service, burial will be at the family plot in Strausstown.
