Col., USAF (retired), 97, of Lebanon died Saturday, September 20, 2008, at Spang Crest Manor. Born January 22, 1911, in Lebanon, a son of the late James Tilden and Lizzie May Snyder Frantz. He was married Jan. 18, 1936, to Sara Ann Hess, and father to James T. Frantz III. In 1928, he graduated from Lebanon High School, and Lebanon Valley College in 1933. His career started at the Army Command and Staff School in 1942, Fort Leavenworth, Kan.; the Inspector Course in 1943, Fort Logan, Colo.; Air Command and Staff College in 1950, Maxwell AFB, Ala.; and Academic Instructor Course in 1951, Maxwell AFB. His military career began with enlistment in Battery H, 213th Coast Artillery, Pennsylvania National Guard, in 1931. He was commissioned second lieutenant Infantry Reserve in 1932. He served four years with the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1937-1941 as camp commander in Maryland and Arizona. Ordered to duty with the Army Air Corps in 1941 and commissioned in the regular U.S. Army in 1947 and transferred to Department of the Air Force in 1948. He retired in 1964 with 32 years of service. From 1964-65, he was with the state health department in Montgomery, Ala., and a school teacher in Northern Lebanon School District from 1966-1970. He was a former member of the Fredericksburg Lion Club and Mt. Lebanon Lodge No. 226 F&AM. He currently was a member of the Air Force Association, AARP and 700 Club; Salem Lutheran Church, where he served as member of church council, chairman of finance committee and vice president of church council. He served as teacher of the Adult Bible Class, both at Salem and Holy Trinity Lutheran churches. He was a member of the Board of Directors, Carlton Square Homeowner's Association for 10 years, and served as a director, vice president and president. Surviving in addition to his wife and son is a brother, John H. Frantz of Louisville, Ky. He was preceded in death by sisters Mae L. Watson, Myrle I. Baum; and brother Harold W. Frantz. Viewing on Wednesday, September 24, 2008, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. in Salem Lutheran Church, 119 N. Eighth St., Lebanon, followed by services at 11:30. Interment in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Spang Crest Patio-Salem, Lebanon, c/o Luthercare, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, PA 17543.
