Miller shabodeho@aol.com December 7, 2008, 2:30 pm Published in the Lebanon Daily News from 11/23/2008 - 11/30/2008 Fugate, Elaine Louise (Smyers) Elaine Louise (Smyers) Fugate, 84, of 629 Maple Ave., DuBois, died peacefully at home Saturday, Nov. 29, 2008, after a lengthy illness. Elaine was born on Feb. 13, 1924, in Sykesville, Pa., and was the daughter of the late Sylvester Hamilton Smyers and Alice L. Smith. She was married to Dr. Howard Fugate Jr. on Dec. 9, 1944, and he survives. Elaine graduated from Sykesville High School in 1941 where she was head cheerleader and played saxophone in the school band. She attended Pennsylvania State University, where she was a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She married Howard in San Diego, Calif., where he was serving in the Naval Hospital in San Diego during World War II. They moved back to Penn State where "Doc" finished college, then went on to medical school in Philadelphia, Pa., where they resided until 1969. At that time, they moved their family back to the DuBois area where they currently reside. Elaine was the mother of five children, all who survive: Kathleen Joanne Messinger of Slate Run, Pa.; Dr. Jeffrey S. Fugate of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; Dr. Howard Fugate III of DuBois, Pa.; Dr. Kenneth F. Fugate of Punxsutawney, Pa.; and Rev. Robert H. Fugate of Santiago, Chile. Elaine has 16 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren. Elaine is preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth, Robert and John and one sister, Ruth Trautman. Elaine's first love was her husband and her children and her home, and she loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother. Elaine was a member of the DuBois Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, and a faithful fan of the Penn State Nittany Lions football team. She and her husband Howard enjoyed going to all of the home football games for the last 25 years. She was a woman of great faith who always kept her hope in God as her reason for living. Visitation will be held Monday 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. at the Mohney-Yargar Funeral Chapel Inc., 142 West Long Ave., DuBois, PA and Tuesday morning 10-11 a.m. at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the church with the Reverend Robert H. Fugate, the Reverend Gary Messinger and the Reverend Tim Conner officiating. Burial will follow in Beulah Cemetery, Reynoldsville, Pa.
