"Gene" Gernert, 83, of Quentin, died Thursday, April 24, 2008, in the VA Medical Center. He was born October 29, 1924, in Mountville, a son of the late Harry and Lillian Winklebleck Gernert. He was a Navy veteran of World War II; a gunner's mate and Seaman 1st class on a LVCP, which was in the first wave onto Normany Beach. He also served on the LST 505 and 133. He was a member of the American Legion #910. He was the owner of the Gernert Market in Lebanon and the owner/operator of Gernert Trucking. Surviving are wife Betty J. Hoke Gernert of Quentin; children, Anthony Gernert of Maple Grove, Minnesota, Claudeen Nguyen of Quentin, Steven Gernert of Fredericksburg, and Lori Gernert of Quentin; siblings Arlene Gingrich of Campbelltown, Gerald Gernert of Forksville, Earl Gernert of Manheim, and Robert Gernert and Sterling Gernert, both of Quentin; grandchildren Justin Nguyen and Joshua Gernert, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Kathryn Ellen Gernert, Elizabeth Fetter, Thomas Gernert, Dorothy Van Scyoc and Harry Gernert. Viewing is scheduled for Wednesday, April 30, 2008, from 11AM-12 noon at Christman's Funeral Home, Inc., 226 Cumberland Street, Lebanon, followed by services at noon.
