George Webster Gotwols, 91, Mt. Lebanon Camp Meeting Grove, Lebanon went home to be with his Lord on Friday April 18, 2008. He was the husband of Ruthann Whitehead Gotwols whom he married in Falls Methodist Church, June 1943. "Web" was born in the East Falls section of Philadelphia on December 13, 1916 son of the late George and Emma Webster Gotwols. He attended Philadelphia schools graduating from the Northeast Boys High and Brown Prep. He and his brothers, Earl and Harold, attended Temple University where all three played on the baseball team; later playing in the P.A. League. Web served with the US Navy as a Yeoman 1st Class during WW2. He studied classical voice at the Clarke Conservatory in Phila. and the Academy of Vocal Arts. He sang with the Phila. Gilbert & Sullivan Co and later with the Berks Grand Opera. He was soloist in several churches and synagogues. He and Ruthann were well known throughout the Eastern Pa. Conference of the United Methodist Church as professional singers and song leaders and with their four children as a family singing group and camp counselors. In 1962 Rev. Gotwols entered ministry in the Methodist Church. He attended Wesley Seminary in Washington DC, where he served as president of his class for 2 years. He served seven congregations in Central PA and Phila., retiring from full time ministry in 1986, serving part time until 1989. As a retired pastor he served as Visitation Pastor for Covenant United Methodist Church, Lebanon and as a chaplain at the Good Samaritan Hospital. He also volunteered for LCCM. Web was known in the Eastern Pa. Conference as an enthusiastic song leader. The Gotwols moved to the Mt. Lebanon Camp Meeting Grove, where they have lived since 1986 with him serving on the board of directors and song leader. Among his hobbies were singing in choirs and senior chorus, wood-working, gardening and reading, especially books on baseball. In addition to his wife he is survived by sons: Andrew and wife Mazie, Columbia; G. Robert and wife Jackie, Wrightsville; Timothy and wife Sandra Jones, Holderess NH; daughter: Virginia Taylor, Wolfeboro NH; 7 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Memorial service Sunday May 11, 2008 at 4:00 PM, Ebenezer United Methodist Church, RT 72 North Lebanon. Private interment will be made at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery.
