Miller shabodeho@aol.com November 5, 2008, 8:02 pm Published in the Lebanon Daily News on 10/20/2008 Haney, Reverend James Magee Reverend James Magee Haney, 91, the beloved husband of Angela Whitaker Haney, and the beloved father of Janella (William) Cooley of Bloomington, Ill., Janette (Thomas) Kohr of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Janitta (Robert) Carithers of Seattle, Wash., died on October 15, 2008, at Cornwall Manor, Cornwall, Pa., a United Methodist retirement village that he helped build 60 years ago. The Rev. James Haney was born July 30,1917, in Farmington, N.J., to the Rev. D. Roe and Nellie Nichols Haney. He is survived by his wife, Angela. They celebrated their 68th wedding anniversary on October 4, 2008. James was a graduate of Hartwick College and Drew Theological Seminary. He was an ordained United Methodist minister for 68 years. As a clergy, and also a son of a Methodist minister, Reverend Haney lived 27 places during his lifetime (New Jersey, New York, Washington, Pennsylvania and Florida). He pastored churches in Onenta, N.Y., West Belmar, N.J., Spokane, Wash., Chalfont, Pa., Saint Clair, Pa., Bryn Mawr, Pa., Pottsville, Pa., Coatesville, Pa., and Philadelphia, Pa. His final clergy appointment was to Arch Street United Methodist Church, Center City, Philadelphia, Pa., from where he retired after 17 years of ministry. He has been the minister emeritus of the Arch Street UMC for the past 25 years. James took delight in his family, and was very proud of his eight grandchildren, the Rev. Angela (Johannes) Bulhof, Melissa (Thomas) Vrana, William (Susie) Cooley III, Sean (Beth) Carithers, Seth (Jennifer) Kohr, Christopher (Monica) Carithers, James Haney (Christina) Cooley, and Melody (Jon) O'Brien; and 17 his great-grandchildren, Sebald, James, and Roger Bulhof, Alyssa, Grace, and Julia Vrana, William, Sara, Emory, Sam, and Baby Boy Cooley, Madeleine, Stella, Hayes, and River Carithers, McKenna and Alaina O'Brien. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Haney Nutt of East Petersburg, Pa. James was known for his compassionate Christian spirit, boundless energy, contagious sense of humor, and engaging preaching style. He was also a talented musician at the piano, organ, violin, marimba and voice. James never met a stranger. He embodied genuine Christian hospitality by treating everyone equally as a child of God, regardless of position, education, race or creed. He loved pastoring and tending to his flock in the center city, and was equally as comfortable tending to his garden and flock of chickens in Bucks County. He was a Mason and a grand chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania, president of the Methodist Social Union, founder of 'Contact' in the Philadelphia area, trustee of Ocean Grove Camp Meeting (chairman of the Music Program), president of the Spiritual Frontiers Fellowship in the Philadelphia area, and a rotarian. He was featured several times in the Philadelphia Bulletin's feature page by Darrell Gifford, who was fascinated by him and his ministry. At James's retirement in 1983, his Episcopal priest friend from seminary years wrote, "Jim, you are so gifted for you are a ten-talent man." In 2007, his 20year-old great-niece wrote, "Uncle Jim and Aunt Angela are such an inspiration to me and I am thankful for their beautiful legacy. I feel that I grew as a woman of faith through visits with them. I find it amazing how God is still using them to touch the lives of others at this stage in their lives." While James will be deeply missed, his family rejoices that he is in heaven with The Lord he loved and served. When asked how he wanted to be remembered, he replied, "That I loved the Lord and tried to show it." Well done, thou good and faithful servant! A memorial service will be held on November 1st at 3 p.m. in Zerr Chapel at Cornwall Manor. Memorials may be given to Arch Street United Methodist Church, 55 N. Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19107; Cornwall United Methodist Church, PO Box 687, Cornwall, PA 17016; Cornwall Manor Zerr Chapel.
