Hess, 84, of Hershey died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at the Masonic Village, Elizabethtown, after a lengthy illness. He was born February 4, 1924, in Hershey, the eldest son of the late Paul E. and Leah (Fidler) Hess. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Thomas L. Hess. Dr. Hess graduated with a degree in naval science from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, and held a master's degree in zoology and a Ph.D in physiology, both from the University of Delaware. He was a retired United States Navy captain, having served in World War II, including the battles of Iowa Jima and Okinawa, and also in the Korean War. He retired from the Hershey Foods Corporation, where he served as director of the environmental affairs department. Prior to joining Hershey Foods, he served as chairman of the department of biology at Lebanon Valley College. Paul was a respected environmental scientist and served on many committees for the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, including the state Environmental Quality Board, Citizens Advisory Council, the air and water quality technical advisory committee, and the solid waste advisory committee. He also served as chairman of the Derry Township Municipal Authority, and was an adjunct professor in environmental pollution control at Penn State's Harrisburg Campus. He was the recipient of Power Magazine's Environmental Protection Award and the Pennsylvania Resources Council Award, Other civic activities included membership in the First United Methodist Church of Hershey, where he served on the Board of Trustees and the church choir; the Rotary Club of Hershey, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow; Brownstone Lodge No. 666 F&AM; the Harrisburg Consistory; and the Zembo Temple Shrine. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Judith (Morrett) Hess; his daughter, Dr. Paula K. Hess of Harrisburg; two sisters, Elizabeth Shearer and her husband Hiram, and Pauline Curry and her husband Irwin, all of Hershey; two sisters-in law, Mary Mack of Leesburg, Va., and Barbara Hess of Oak Island, N.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Paul's life will be held Saturday, March 15, 2008, at 11 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church. Friends may call Saturday at the church from 10 until 11 a.m. Interment with military honors will follow in the Hershey Cemetery. The family would like to thank the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, and particularly the staff of Lafayette West, for the capable and compassionate care they provided. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to the Organ Fund, First United Methodist Church, 64 W. Chocolate Avenue, Hershey, PA 17033; or to the Masonic Village, One Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown, PA 17022. Hoover Funeral Homes & Crematory Inc. in Hershey is handling the arrangements.
