Bernette S. Holland died in her home in Palmyra on May 7, 2008. She was 89, and looking forward to reuniting with her beloved husband of more than 50 years, Doyle H. Holland, who died in March 1995. Both Bernette and Doyle were born and raised in Berwick, Pa. They moved to Palmyra, Pa., in 1964, after living in Bristol and Clarks Summit, Pa. Both were retired from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. Although Bernette had no children, she loved her nieces and nephews as if they were her own, often referring to them as her "angels." Visits to aunt Bernette were always filled with food, fun and hugs - the building blocks of many fond memories. In more recent years, she enjoyed visiting family in Pennsylvania, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Bernette loved her music, especially hymns and patriotic songs, which could be heard throughout the house on most days. She also enjoyed popular tunes from the big band era, which reminded her of the days when Doyle played saxophone in local bands. She was thrilled when her grandnephews became musicians, and even traveled to see them perform on stage or in field competitions. The daughter of Nola Belle Snyder and Ralph Savidge, Bernette was the second of five children. She was predeceased by her brother Don Savidge, and her sisters, Bernice Traugh, Belva Wozniak, and Beatrice Thompson. Having now reunited with all of them, she is keeping company with a different host of angels, including her grandnephew, James. The family offers special thanks to the many friends and neighbors who made it possible for "Bernie" to remain in her home, especially these last months and weeks. A memorial service and celebration of Bernette's life will be held June 9, 2008, at 11 a.m. at the Trinity United Church of Christ, 40 W. Pine Street, Palmyra, Pa. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Home Healthcare & Hospice, 1200 Walnut Bottom Road, Suite 302, Carlisle, PA 17015.
