William A. Koch, 83, World War II veteran and New York telephone pioneer died peacefully in his sleep Friday, May 23, 2008, at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, Pa. Mr. Koch was a 1941 graduate of Olney High School, Philadelphia, Pa., and a 1949 graduate of Cornell University, New York, where he majored in electrical engineering, and was a catcher on the varsity baseball team. His college career was interrupted by military service in the Signal Corps, where he rose to the rank of technical sergeant while serving with the U.S. Army in Belgium just after the Battle of the Bulge and into the occupation of Europe. Upon his return from Europe, he married the former Miss Jean Flagg Koch. They were married 55 years until her death in 2003. He is survived by three sons, Raymond William Koch of Arlington, Virginia, Glenn Flagg Koch of Allentown, Pa., and David Elm Koch of Baltimore, Maryland. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Betz of Huntington Valley, Pa.; and two grandchildren, Emma Barton Koch and Julian Flagg Koch, both of Baltimore, Maryland. Mr. Koch, like his father before him, spent his working career within the Bell System. He was one of the system planners assigned to the New York World's Fair in 1962, and joined AT&T International's group in Teheran, Iran, in 1976. Mr. Koch retired from AT&T in 1982, and devoted the rest of his life to farming while supporting both his family and Cornell University. He and his wife endowed a scholarship at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine that will support married students in their pursuit of an advanced degree. Mr. Koch will be interred with full military honors at a private ceremony at the Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, Pa. The family asks in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the William A. & Jean Flagg Koch Scholarship at Cornell's College of Veterinary Medicine, P.O. Box 2600, Ithaca, NY 14851. Grose Funeral Home, Myerstown, Pa., is in charge of arrangements. Published in the Lebanon Daily News on 5/25/2008.
