Kuhns, 88, of Susquehanna Township passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2008, in the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He was born on December 27, 1919, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to the late Foster and Estelle (Shearer) Kuhns. Don was a World War II veteran; he served as a member of the U.S. Army Band. He later taught music at the Scotland School for Veterans Children. A professional musician, he was very talented on clarinet and saxophone. He composed music, had his own dance band, played with the Spring Garden Band in York, and was a musical associate of the late Clay Shaw. Don was retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry, Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation. He was the first rehabilitation counselor at the Harrisburg State Hospital. While with the bureau, he developed and directed the "Interviewing and Understanding Handicapped Job Applicants" Program. Because of his strong commitment to his church he was honored by the congregation to be made a life member of the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg. Surviving are his wife of 38 years, Leah F. Kuhns; a son Ned H. Kuhns of York; two daughters, Donna J. Skaggs and her husband Phil of York, and Deborah L. Seville and her husband Jerome of Middletown. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 12, 2008, in the Unitarian Church of Harrisburg, 1280 Clover Lane, Harrisburg, PA 17113, with the Rev. Howard N. Dana officiating. The family will receive relatives and friends at a reception in the church immediately following the memorial service.
