Long, 90, of Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon, died Thursday, October 2, 2008, in the manor. She met her husband, Dr. Theodore K. Long, during his internship at Lankenau Hospital, and they were married for 68 years this past August. Born in Fairmont, Indiana, on May 27, 1918, she was the daughter of the late Arthur and Ethel Bauer Sommers. She was a registered nurse, and assisted her husband in his medical practice. Velma was a 1936 graduate of Collegeville High School, and received her R.N. degree from Lankenau Hospital, Philadelphia, in 1939. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Hospital Women's Auxiliary; Lebanon Women's Club; the Lebanon Country Club, where she was a two time Ladies Club Golf Champion and Doubles Tennis Champion;, and the Quentin Riding Club. She was an avid skier, traveler, and bridge player, and during nursing school, was the high scorer on the Ladies Basketball Team. Surviving in addition to her husband, are two sons, Theodore K. Long Jr. and wife Antonia Kury of Allentown and Attorney Thomas S. Long and wife Patricia Shay of Lebanon; a daughter, Betsy L. Rebol of Atlanta, Ga.; nine grandchildren; 10 greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Lucille S. Miller of Florida. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Elmo B. and Virgil Sommers; a sister, Agnes Ford; and a sonin-law, John A. Rebol. Services will be held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Spang Crest Manor, 945 Duke Street, Lebanon, PA 17042. Kreamer Funeral Home and Crematory, Annville, is in charge of arrangements.
