Lukas, M.D., 84, of West Cornwall died Friday, July 25, 2008, at Spang Crest Manor, Lebanon. He was the husband of Elizabeth Weil Lukas, whom he married July 15, 1950. Born August 4, 1923, in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Gregory Andre Lukas and Sabina Zadroga Lukas. Dr. Lukas received his A.B. degree in 1944, and his M.D. in 1947, both from Columbia University. After obtaining his M.D., Dr. Lukas joined the New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York City, N.Y. Following internship and residency there, he conducted research to design and implement instruments and procedures for cardiac catheterization, and he conducted original research on digoxin. He developed and became director of the CardioPulmonary Laboratory, and was promoted to associate professor of Medicine of Cornell University Medical College. During his time at Cornell, Dr. Lukas mentored numerous junior colleagues, some of whom have gone on to prestigious achievements. In 1971, Dr. Lukas moved to Memorial Hospital/Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City to become chief of their cardiopulmonary service. From 19781982, Dr. Lukas was the vice president of Medical Affairs at Elliot Hospital in Manchester, New Hampshire, and from 1982-1984, he was associate professor of Clinical Medicine at Rutgers Medical School, and head of the Division of Cardiology at Cooper Hospital/University Medical Center in Camden, New Jersey. In 1985, Dr. Lukas joined the medical staff of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and was appointed clinical professor of Medicine in the College of Medicine of The Pennsylvania State University in 1989. Dr. Lukas retired in 1997 at the age of 74. Dr. Lukas served as a private first class in the U.S. Army from 19431946, and was a senior assistant surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service from 1950-1953. In addition to his strong commitment to his hospital patients and his medical research, Dr. Lukas was an avid saltwater fisherman on the outer beaches of Cape Cod. He also put his skilled hands to work on every home carpentry project that he could think of, with the same meticulous care that he gave to his work. Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Roger Lukas of Honolulu, Hawaii, Claudia N. Lukas of Redwood City, California, and Brian R. Lukas of Studio City, California; a sister, Dolores Lukas Walker, of New Gretna, New Jersey; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial Mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart of Jesus R.C. Church, Cornwall Road, Cornwall, with visitation from 9:30-10.
