Edward S. Miller, Jr., 63, of 638 S. Coldbrook Avenue, Chambersburg, died on Friday, May 23, 2008 in the Chambersburg Hospital. Born on March 16, 1945 in Lebanon, PA, he was the son of the late Edward S. Miller Sr. and Anna Parks Miller, of Mt. Gretna, PA. A 1963 graduate of the former Cornwall High School (now Cedar Crest), Ed served in the U.S. Navy. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in 1969 and served as a PA State Trooper until retiring in 1992. He then worked as the Assistant Work Release Director for the Franklin County Prison and Assistant Manager at United Towers in downtown Chambersburg. An avid golfer himself, he also worked at Majestic Ridge Golf Club. Many who played local sports while growing up will remember him as their tough-minded, yet fair baseball or football coach. He was the head coach for the Chambersburg Trojans junior varsity from 1986 through the 2008 season. He also coached American Legion Baseball and the Chambersburg Maroons. Years ago he coached the South Hamilton Little League team and the Chambersburg Steelers, where he served as past president of the Chambersburg Touchdown Club. Ed was a member of Central Presbyterian Church, BPOElks Lodge 600, where he served twice as Past Exalted Ruler, Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599, Burt J. Asper American Legion Post 46, Hume McNeil Byers AmVets Post 224, Marine Corps League, George Washington Lodge 143 F&AM, the National Rifle Association, and the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Ed was an avid Penn State fan. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, and most of all, spending time with his grandchildren. Aside from his mother, he is survived by his wife of over 41 years, Pamela Hartnett Miller, whom he married on June 18, 1966; one daughter, Petula Smith (and husband, Chad); one son, E. Samuel Miller III (and wife, Janine); four grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith, Robert Smith, Truman Smith, and Reese Miller, all of Chambersburg; four sisters, Ruth Lewis of Chandler, AZ, Kathryn Dissinger of Annville, PA, Jane Miller of Richmond, VA, and Rosemarie Andress of Mesa Arizona. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 7 PM on Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in the chapel of the Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA, with the Rev. Matthew Richardson officiating. Friends and family are also invited to the interment, which will be at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, May 28 in Fort Indiantown Gap National Cemetery with members of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 conducting military graveside honors. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 PM.
