Miller, 74, of 109 Lebanon Avenue, Mount Gretna, formerly of Manheim and Millersburg, Pa., passed away peacefully on Friday, July 4, 2008, at Essa Flory Hospice Center of Lancaster. He was the husband of Sylvia S. Stoudt Miller, with whom he celebrated 50 years of marriage November 23, 2007. Born in Millersburg on May 6, 1934, he was the son of Violet H. Wert Miller of Millersburg, and the late Kenneth Miller. He earned Eagle Scout recognition under Scout Master Ned Smith, a highly acclaimed wildlife artist. He graduated from Millersburg High School and from the former Kutztown State Teachers College with a master's degree in art education. His first teaching position was in 19561957 at Wiconisco School District, where he taught art to all 12 grades. After serving in the U.S. Army from 1957-1963 in Ulm, Germany, he worked for the Manheim Central School District as a junior high art teacher for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986. He also coached elementary wrestling, football and varsity tennis for the district. An active Manheim Central Baron Football fan, he filmed the Baron games for over 30 years. In the community, he was an active member of the Mount Gretna United Methodist Church, and an active volunteer at the Mount Gretna Playhouse. He was a scholastic arts judge for local student art for over 20 years. After retirement, he became involved in wood working, showing his unique wooden jewelry and art in the Mount Gretna Art Show and other local fine art shows. He enjoyed building and flying experimental airplanes. He was an advocate for alternative energy, and designed and helped build his family's homes, including one that was passive solar. Surviving in addition to his wife and mother are two daughters, Lori J., wife of Daniel L. Zimmerman of Lititz, and Lisa G. Filling of Mount Gretna, wife of Brian Filling of Mountville; three grandchildren, Kelsey, Alyssa, and Nathan Zimmerman; and a brother, Kenneth L., husband of June Miller, Millersburg, Pa. He was a member of NEA, PSERS, PSEAR, EAA-Experimental Aircraft Association, Harrisburg and Lancaster, and a former member of the Wood Scrollers Club of Lancaster County. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service to celebrate his life at Mount Gretna United Methodist Church (Camp Meeting area of Mount Gretna) corner of Fourth and Boehm Avenue, Mount Gretna, on Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Janet Sue Steger officiating. Friends may visit with the family immediately following the service at the church on Wednesday afternoon. Interment will be private and at the convenience of the family in Sinking Springs Cemetery, Berks County. The Buch Funeral Home, Manheim, is in charge of arrangements. .
