Shay of Lebanon, died Friday, November 7, 2008, at the Lebanon VA Medical Center at the age of 89. He was the husband of Patricia M. Barry Shay, with whom he celebrated a 61st wedding anniversary on October 25, 2008. Born in Lebanon on January 12, 1919, he was the son of the late Fred W. Shay and Helen Barry Shay. He enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in July 1941, and graduated from Army Air Corps Cadets as a pilot. He was a highly decorated pilot, who flew 63 combat missions in the European Theater, and 26 combat missions in the Pacific Theater of war. He flew his last combat mission August 12, 1945, from Okinowa. He remained in the Air Force Reserves and was a member of the Pa. Air National Guard, 148th Fighter Squadron. He remained in aviation most of his life as a commercial and executive pilot. He also founded Lancaster Aviation Inc., from which he retired in September 1983. He was a member of St. Mary's Church, Lebanon. He was a 1936 graduate of Lebanon High School. He was a life member of the Quiet Birdman, an honorary aviation group. He was a life member of the B-26 Marauder Society, a life member of the Lebanon Elks BPOE 631, a life member of the Lebanon VFW Post 23, and a member of the Navy Club Ship 91 in Lebanon. He was a long time member of the Rescue Fire Co. No. 4, a member of the Friendship Fire Co., a member of the Lebanon Historical Society, and a member of the Lebanon Country Club, where he was an active golf member with three hole in ones. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, Joseph F. Shay of Mt. Gretna; a daughter, Patricia Anne, wife of Attorney Thomas S. Long of Lebanon; four grandchildren, Victoria L. Allsop of Truckee, Calif., Mary Katherine Long of Charlottesville, Va., Thomas Shay Long of West Chester, Pa., and Frederick S. Long at home; one greatgrandson, James Thomas Allsop; a brother, William J. Shay, and his wife, Carolyn; a sister, Dorothy Shay; brother-inlaw Edward Schlegel; and several nephews and nieces. Preceding him in death was a sister, Elizabeth Schlegel. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St. Mary's Church, 2 N. Eighth St., Lebanon, PA 17046. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. Visitation Wednesday morning 910 at the church. Contributions to St. Mary's Church or the VA Medical Center Hospice Unit, 1700 S. Lincoln Ave., Lebanon, PA 17042.
