William W. Slike Sr., 89, 615 S. Seventh Street, Lebanon, died Monday, May 19, 2008, in the Lebanon Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the husband of the late Louella M. Moudy Slike, who died May 9, 2007. He was born in Lebanon on June 4, 1918, son of the late Floyd W. and Goldie E. Whitcraft Slike. He was a retired self-employed painting and wallpaper contractor. He was an active member of Covenant United Methodist Church, Lebanon, where he served on the trustees, administrative council building committee, active in many Sunday school positions, president of usher group, had managed the softball team, bowled on several church leagues. He and his late wife hosted a Bible study group in their home for many years, and were active in the resettlement of Vietnam refugees, and have lifetime friendships with those they help, with even today were respectfully addressed as Mom and Pop. In his younger years, he was active in sports, playing baseball, softball and bowled. He was well known in the Lebanon area in the amateur baseball league as a catcher, and played on the 1940 Lebanon Bicentennial All Star Team. He was inducted into the Lebanon District Bowling Hall of Fame. He and his late wife were also active in Cub Scouts, serving as Lebanon's district and assistant district commissioners for many years. He was formerly an active fireman for the Goodwill Fire Co. He had also worked for the Bethlehem Steel Corp. and the Lebanon Daily News. Surviving are a son, William W. Slike Jr. and wife Fay of Myerstown; grandson William W. Slike III and wife Amy of Fishers, Ind.; greatgranddaughter Shelayna, wife of Jeremy Johnson of Fishers, Ind.; sisters Bertha Burke of Lebanon, Verna Henning of Lebanon; brother Floyd Slike and wife Theresa of Pueblo, Colo.; nieces; nephews; and his Vietnamese family Thanh, Nhan, Henry, Lein, Houng, Dung Nguyen and their families. He was preceded in death by sisters Ada Curtin, Kathryn Boyer, Dorothy McMinn; and brother Paul Slike. Funeral services Thursday at 2 p.m., Covenant United Methodist Church, North Ninth and Church streets, Lebanon, where a viewing will be held Thursday beginning at 1 p.m. Interment Ebenezer "Covenant" Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Covenant UM Church, 346 N. Ninth St., Lebanon 17046. The Rohland Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of the arrangements.
